Living in a Semi Truck
If you’re going to be spending days, weeks or months at a time living in a semi-truck, why wouldn’t you want to make it a bit more comfortable? It’s not hard to stay connected to family and friends while you’re on the road and away from them. If you don’t already have a cell phone, get one. Nothing will keep you connected like being able to pull over and hear the voices of your loved ones when you’re far away from home.
Most service providers have special plans that allow you to have a certain amount of ‘anytime’ minutes which means that you don’t have to wait until the evening to call anyone to save money on charges. Most cell phones have digital picture-taking ability now and so you can actually take, send and receive photos through your phone, over the airwaves, no matter where you’re at in the country.
Some drivers like to take some personal items from home to keep in their rigs to remind them of home. Maybe it’s a favorite pillow from home, or a stuffed animal given by a child to keep the driver company on the long drives away from home. The important thing is to make sure that you’re comfortable in your driving environment because that’s where you’ll be spending the majority of your time in your career. You can invest in a laptop computer that will allow you to keep track of anything you need to keep track of and also, with WiFi technology in most newer laptops, you can get free internet connections simply by finding local ‘hotspots’ along your routes. Many rest stops are set up as WiFi hotspots now, making it very easy to keep in touch with your friends and family by email. This is a good way to show children, by way of emailed photos of the places along the route, what you do for a living.
Many drivers take along audiobooks to listen to as they drive. Some drivers find that it’s sometimes hard to stay awake to read a book after a long day of driving, but listening to a book being read while you’re driving is an excellent alternative. Some semi-truck drivers use Internet connections at rest stops to take online courses, downloading assignments and uploading homework. Many long-haul drivers have earned degrees by taking university programs while they’re on the road, earning a living. And don’t forget about taking your spouse along on the road with you. Many couples spend all their time together working on long-haul rigs, making deliveries and pick-ups across the country every week. There’s no chance of missing each other if you can simply look over and see each other on the seat of the rig.
