Working on a Train

Jared S. has had railroad jobs traveling through the lower United States for almost three years now. He started out as a baggage handler and is slowly working his way up to becoming a conductor trainee.

He’s just started his classroom training to become a conductor and is finding the training informative and challenging.

What do you like best about working on a train?

I’d have to say what I like best is meeting new people every day. I like doing a job that makes a difference too. I also know that if I do my job well, I’ll be able to move up and add to my career with the railroad.

Has the work been what you expected it to be?

If anything, it’s been a little better than I’m used to. The work is challenging but I was prepared for that when I started out. And the salary is good and will only get better as I move up in my position.

Name your favorite part of the work.

Well, I’d have to say that riding on the train between stops and seeing all the scenery is probably one of my favorite parts of the job. Of course, you still have work to do on the train between stops, and it’s not easy but at least you get to see a lot of the country while you’re doing it.

Would you recommend railroad work to your friends?

Oh yeah. I’ve already told a lot of my friends about what a great way it is to make a living. I mean, some of them have been looking for this kind of career for a long time. I highly recommend it for those who want to meet new people all the time and get to work with a great bunch of people.
