Profile of an Adventure Camp
Outward Bound is one of, if not the most, popular and intense Adventure Camps that exist. It first began in World War II and was officially started in the states in 1950. Outward Bound challenges people through wilderness exploration and extreme survival situations helping people to challenge themselves with the intention of building character and perspective. Their mission statement states:
To inspire character development and self-discovery in people of all ages and walks of life through challenge and adventure, and to impel them to achieve more than they ever thought possible, to show compassion for others and to actively engage in creating a better world.
Their courses are based on the elements of the outdoors and take place in Alaska, the western and eastern United States, the Caribbean and even South America. Their courses challenge individuals while surrounding an adventurous theme such as ice climbing and hiking, backpacking, whitewater rafting, dog sledding and desert backpacking. Check out Outward Bound’s Course List for more information.
Outward Bound has received so much positive feedback because of how challenging the courses are. Courses are mapped and chosen carefully and designed to really challenge the individual or group. Not to mention, wilderness camps take place in some of the most breath taking regions in the world. Talk about refreshing!
