Often, even if you have a valid degree, a school or film production studio may not recognize it because it is not on “their list” of “approved” schools.

This is extremely important especially if you wish to become a teacher within a public school district or college program.

Therefore, always remember your intent for going to the school and plan ahead for your obstacles. The bottom line, schooling in and of itself does not guarantee landing a position in either the film or music industry.

Without a doubt, the single most important factor is the willingness to learn. In most corporate environments, established policies and cultures have been created. When seeking out employment at these music and film companies they look for someone who may fit their mold. Regardless of how much educational experience one has, it is important to remember that the entertainment business is really about relationships. The entertainment business is about working with clients, understanding motivations, understanding creative direction, and placing trust in individuals in order for them to represent a creative vision accurately. Equipment doesn’t do this. The operator does.

It’s not the tool, it’s the surgeon. Not the brush but the painter’s touch. Therefore, it is always important that you keep the correct perspective. This is a people business and if you have trouble dealing with people, you will need to work on this area. Technical skills must be present. What you should focus on is “what do you bring to the table that others do not?” This along with your educational experience will give you a noticeable edge over the competition.
