Teaching Jobs with Berlitz Abroad
Berlitz has been providing courses to people who are interested in learning a new language for more than 130 years. The company was founded by Maximilian Berlitz in 1878.
Berlitz was brought up in Germany’s Black Forest region. He came to the United States and worked as a private language teacher.
Maximilian Berlitz was eventually hired by the Warner Polytechnic College. Berlitz was the only faculty member and he decided to hire an assistant to teach French to students. When the new teacher, Nicholas Joy, arrived, Berlitz was ill. Joy spoke no English and Berlitz instructed him to “point at objects and act out verbs as best he could.” When Berlitz returned to work six weeks later, he found that the students were busy interacting with their teacher in beautifully-accented French.
Berlitz built on this technique to keep learning a foreign language interesting for students as he opened a number of learning centers in locations around the world. The company operates more than 95 centers in Asia, along with over 195 schools in Europe. There are more than 70 centers operating in Canada and the United States.
Millions of people have benefitted from the language training they took through the company. The company hires instructors with the following qualifications:
- Fluency in the language they want to teach
- Mature, professional and dynamic
- Excellent communication skills
- Willing to commit to working for at least one year
- Interested in working with children as well as adult learners
Along with these qualifications, Berlitz is looking for people who can develop effective time management and customer service skills.
Staff members are an integral part in helping students reach their learning goals and the company encourages them to share their ideas with managers regularly.
