Types of Jobs in Thailand
Private Tutoring
As a native English-speaker, you will find it easy to pick up private tutoring or other teaching jobs Thailand. One-on-one or small group sessions are ideal because conversation is inclusive and individual needs can be addressed a lot better. Yet another positive aspect of private lessons is that the pay per hour is often significantly higher than at regular established schools. Most english teachers choose to take on other private students in addition to a steady job at a regular school to supplement their income as teachers. This can be a very good way to make some extra cash on the side.
Large English Schools
Teaching at a larger school has a number of distinct advantages over small schools or even private tutoring: large schools often pay quite well, will sponsor you for a non-immigrant visa and work permit, have instructional materials on-hand, and may provide you with housing assistance and air fare home once you have fulfilled your contract. Larger schools generally have limited class sizes as well, which makes for greater organization and higher levels of learning because you’ll be able to spend more time with each student. In order to teach at a large school, you will be required to have a bachelor’s degree and most prefer teachers who have ESL or RSA certification or who have TESL experience, but it is generally not required.
Small English Schools
Small schools do not often have comparable benefits to schools that are established; however, small schools are abundant and the hiring requirements aren’t as stiff. If you don’t have any TESL experience, or if you aren’t sure about committing for six months to a year, teaching at a small school may be your best bet.
Universities
Many universities in Thailand employ full-time conversational English instructors, most of whom have master’s degrees. The benefits may be roughly comparable to those you’d find at larger schools, but instructors at colleges and universities are likely to have more vacation time and great respect within the community. Locating these jobs can be difficult, but if you know someone with connections or have a special skill or knowledge of the jargon in a particular field, you’re likely to find a job.
