Big Sky Resort was founded by the former NCB Newsman Chet Huntley in 1973. He purchased the 10,000 acres of ranch land surrounding our lovely Lone Peak. In 1976 Boyne Resorts purchased the area and has owned it ever since. Nestled in the Gallatin National Forest, surrounded by the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area, Big Sky is situated between the Spanish Peaks and the rest of the Madison Mountain Range. Boyne USA Resorts owns a variety of different Ski and Summer resorts around the nation.
This area earns its name because of its unbroken horizons, crisp, clean air, and the sheer magnitude of open space around it. With the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park only 45 minutes away, Big Sky sees guests traveling from around the world to experience the rugged ambiance of Montana country.
Bozeman is just 40 miles north of Big Sky and is home to Montana State University, Museum of the Rockies, and a rustic downtown full of fun. Bozeman has been the #1 fastest growing micropolitan (Population less that 50,000) for the last 4 years, as of 2021. Bozeman is located in the Gallatin Valley, between the Bridger Range and the north ends of the Gallatin and Madison Mountain Ranges. With mountains found on all sides of Bozeman there is endless hiking, biking, and exploring for the adventurous soul.
Big Sky is known for pushing the limits of skiing. Whether it is providing 4,350 vertical feet of terrain from the top of Lone Peak or installing North America’s most technologically advanced chairlift-we are always looking for new ways to create exceptional experiences for our guests. 300 degrees of skiing off the towering Lone Peak, surrounded by three other mountains, spans 5,850 acres of terrain to explore. If you are just starting out on snow, 2,300 of those acres are beginner and intermediate terrain that is perfect for learning and improving your technique. For the experts, Big Sky provides lift-served access to some of the most aggressive in-bounds terrain in the world.
With Yellowstone National Park located 45 minutes south of Big Sky we have easy access to beautiful views and exciting adventure. While the town of West Yellowstone is quiet during the winter, it is the mecca for motorized adventures into the park. During the wintertime, the only way to access the Park is via Snowmobile, Snow coach, or alternate motorized snow tours. Winter is especially interesting in this part of the country as the icy air mixes with the boiling steam of the geysers, the hot pots, and mud cauldrons.
Lone Mountain Ranch, located between Big Sky Town and Resort has 85K of world-renowned cross-country ski trails. Between the Gallatin National Forrest and the trails provided by BSCO and LMR the ability to adventure outside in the wintertime is never-ending. Big Sky is surrounded by the Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area which provides quiet adventures uninhibited by motorized vehicles. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, and backcountry skiing are some of the more popular activities to enjoy.
Other activities include horseback rides, dinner sleigh rides, hunting, and fishing. For more information, please visit our website: Winter Activities.
