BYU-Hawaii ESL and TESOL Programs
People interested in pursuing a career in ESL may be interested in the Bachelor’s degree program offered by Brigham Young University.
The four-year program is available to full-time and part-time students. Prospective ESL majors must be fluent in English as well as another language.
As part of the program, students must complete a certain number of hours of practice teaching. Another block of time is spent observing teaching methods. A person majoring in ESL at Brigham Young University will take the following courses:

How to Apply for Admission to Brigham Young University
Prospective students at Brigham Young University are evaluated on their academic record, as well as personal factors. Applicants who have at least 30 hours of college credit are required to submit their official transcripts along with their application materials. A person who doesn’t have 30 hours or more of college credit must submit their SAT/ACT scores, high school transcripts, as well as any college transcripts.
Graduate Program in TESOL
Brigham Young also offers a Master’s Degree in TESOL. This program is designed for students who are looking toward a career teaching ESL or EFL in a school or corporate setting.
Some people who enroll in the program are interested in working overseas or as an administrator for an ESL/EFL program.
Applying to Graduate School at Brigham Young
The deadline for applications to Brigham Young’s Master’s degree in TESOL program is January 15 each year. Materials are submitted directly to the Linguistics and English Language Department. When determining which applicants will be accepted, the University considers the following:
- Grade Point Average (GPA) in TESOL Certificate Courses
- Letter of Intent (applicant discusses their experience, plans for the future, and commitment to the field of ESL/EFL)
- Thesis Proposal (500-750 words explaining what the applicant proposes to study for their thesis or research project)
