Company Meals for Seafood Workers
Many companies offer subsidized or free meals to their employees. Usually the food is hearty and very plentiful; it is often served buffet-style. As with housing, many companies pay their employees extra if they agree to eat off site. Most fish processing companies give their employees an assortment of tasty goodies such as fresh fruit or pastries during their breaks (usually after every two hours of work).
Anyone not provided with company-subsidized room and board must do their food shopping in local grocery outlets. The prices can range from 10-40 percent higher than food prices in the Lower 48.
People working on boats almost always eat their meals on board, and while larger vessels have experienced on-board cooks to prepare all the daily meals, on smaller boats they are much more casual.
